First blog post (About Me)

Hi!
Thanks for visiting my blog.

This is my first blog post, and WordPress suggests using this space to introduce myself and tell what this blog will be about, so here goes:

I’m a stay-at-home mom. (Sometimes a part-time work-from-home mom.  I do some freelance writing when I can.) I’m not an expert on parenthood.  In fact, I actually went into it somewhat unprepared, as being a parent is something my past self thought I’d never be doing, until I found out, quite unexpectedly, that I was pregnant.  Since then, I’ve been on a journey that has brought me both difficulty and joy.  I’m not proud to admit that I’ve sometimes found myself wondering how much easier my life would be without that adorable tiny human. At the same time, I’m glad he’s here.  My son has taught me more than I expected to know.  (In return, I am trying to teach him things he’ll need to know in life.  It’s too early to tell whether I’ve been effective.)

In addition to the typical struggles of living with a toddler, I also struggle with Bipolar Disorder and ADHD.  Both of these have affected many parts of my life, but I don’t use them as an excuse for any of my failures (although I also try to not be too hard on myself, either).  So far in my adult life (which is something I also consider myself somewhat inexperienced in), I’ve been learning to not be bitter about my mistakes and failures, because they’ve led the way to where I am now.  Had I made better choices, or succeeded in everything I tried, I might not have ended up with the life I have now, and for that, I am grateful.

It’s hard to tell right now what I’ll do with this blog, if anything.  For now, I think it’ll be a gallery of my thoughts and feelings, and some updates about my family.

Some of my New Year’s resolutions are to document more, because my memory isn’t great on its own, and my son is at a special time in his life when any memories I can hold onto will be cherished later, and to write more and try to get back the creative energy I used to have.  My husband has been telling me for awhile that with all the thoughts, opinions, and stories I have, I should start a blog, so now I’m finally doing it, and hoping that this may also help me accomplish those goals.

Now I should tell you a bit about my family.  (The word “family” can have a lot of different meanings.  For the purposes of this blog, it means those I share a household with.)  The members of this household are:

  • Rebecca –
    – That’s me.  I’m the writer of this blog
  • Josh –
    – That’s my husband.  He has a blog, too.
(For anyone interested, here’s a link to Josh’s blog.  It’s mostly about programming and tech-related stuff.) He’s also working on an ambitious creative endeavor that I will post more details about as they become available.
  • Kj –
    – He doesn’t have a blog.  He doesn’t even have a job. In his defense, he can’t read or write, and the closest thing he does to typing is punching the keyboard when he thinks no one’s looking.  We’re working on that.  In his defense (for all of the above), he’s not even two years old.
  • Willie –
    – He also doesn’t have a blog.  In his defense, he’s a cat.  Actually, now that I think about it, that’s not such a great defense, considering how popular cats are on the internet.  Maybe I should have a talk with him about that.

Now, I think this is the part of the introductory blog post where I, the mom, should say something nice, like that the love of my family is what keeps me going.  But it would be a disservice if I didn’t give credit where credit is due: Coffee.  Coffee plays a major part in keeping me going.  Way too much coffee.

This is getting a bit lengthy, so I should probably wrap it up and save some content for another post.
Since I’m new to the world of blogging, I’d love to know who is reading this (if anyone), so please let me know in the comments who you are, or how you and I relate, or even just tell me about your favorite book. (or favorite TV show.  or favorite blog.  or favorite video game. or favorite ice cream flavor.  or favorite obsolete ’90s trend.  …or whatever you feel like sharing.)    I can’t wait to hear from you!

    • I recently got on Instagram because I realized that’s where all the people who used to be on Facebook went (I’m really behind on this stuff). I quickly learned that daily pictures and videos of cats are totally acceptable on Instagram, so there’s plenty of him there! I haven’t gone as far yet as making him his own Instagram account, though. 😛
